Dragonfly Tapping Instruments
Mark was born and raised in New Zealand and studied piano from when he was about 10 years old. As a teen this classical training was slowly replaced with a growing passion for guitar and after having played in several high school rock bands he moved towards solo composition in his university years. He was drawn in particular towards acoustic guitar and his first homegrown album 'Thin Space' was dedicated specifically to a layered exploration of acoustic guitar sound. After losing the tip of his left hand index finger in an accident he began to explore alternative tunings and techniques and also started making his own instruments. The interaction between 'making' and 'playing', exploring both instrument and technique, and has been a driving force behind Mark's music.
After finishing his studies he opportunity to travel to Argentina and work as a music teacher and he has ended up spending most of his adult life in Patagonia. This is where he currently lives and works making and repairing stringed instruments of all sorts. Since tapping and other 'alternative' techniques have always been present in his playing style, it was natural that he should start to develop and modify instruments optimized for these specific techniques. Over the years he had already made several 'stick'-like tapping instruments, but it wasn't until he hit on a particularly simple minimalist guitar/bass design without a body that many things seemed came together for him and he began to realize the versatility and potential such instruments could have for his own composition and musical direction. This design became his first 6-string model for 'Dragonfly Tapping Instruments'. He now makes 6, 7 and 8 string (mono and stereo) models designed specifically for touchstyle in a wide range of tunings, with several other tapping-inspired designs in the pipeline.
Since the development of these instruments he has dedicated most of his playing and composition time specifically to them. Ironically, this has rekindled his interest in piano and inspired further bass and percussion exploration too. Although recording and small intimate live performances have always been the main focus for his musical output, he occasionally performs to the wider public. He has made several trips within Argentina promoting his music and instruments, giving workshops and performances … but in general he is quite happy just to be at home in his small workshop space, with the vegetable garden and chickens close by!

Mark nació y fue criado en Nueva Zelanda y empezó a estudiar piano cuando tenia 10 años. En su adolescencia su amor por el piano fue reemplazado gradualmente por una pasión por la guitarra, y después de haber intentado tocar en varias bandas de rock se dedico a componer y tocar solo en sus años universitarios. Fue atraído en particular por el sonido de la guitarra acústica. Su primer disco, 'Thin Space', fue principalmente una exploración con eso. Después de un accidente donde perdio una parte de su dedo indice en su mano izquierda, empezó a experimentar con afinaciones y técnicas alternativas y también comenzó a fabricar sus propios instrumentos. La relación entre 'hacer' y 'tocar' instrumentos siempre ha sido de gran influencia en su dirección musical.
Cuando finalizo sus estudios viajó a Argentina para trabajar enseñando música en un colegio bilingüe y se termino radicando en la Patagonia Argentina donde ahora vive y trabaja en la fabricación y reparación de instrumentos de todo tipo. Técnicas 'alternativas' como tapping siempre han formado parte del estilo de Mark, entonces naturalmente empezó a fabricar instrumentos diseñados para explotarlos al máximo. Con el paso de los años ya había fabricado varios instrumentos sin cuerpo tipo 'stick', pero cuando finalmente se quedo con un diseño muy sencillo se dio cuenta de su potencial y quería ofrecerlos a otros músicos también. Ese diseño para su emprendimiento, 'Dragonfly Tapping Instruments', fue el primer modelo de 6 cuerdas. Ahora también ofrece instrumentos de 7 y 8 cuerdas (mono y stereo) diseñados específicamente para tapping y tiene varios otros modelos en una etapa de desarrollo.
Desde la concepción de este linea de instrumentos se ha dedicado casi exclusivamente a tocar y componer con ellos. Irónicamente, esto ha despertado nuevamente su interés en piano, bajo y percusión. En general su enfoque esta en la grabación de sus composiciones y en hacer pequeños conciertos íntimos, pero cada tanto colabora en algún otro proyecto musical o sale a tocar para un público mas amplio. También viaja dentro de la Argentina promocionando sus instrumentos y música ... pero es mas común encontrarlo trabajando con algún instrumento en su taller, cerca a sus gallinas y huerta!
